Compiling a wedding gift list

A boy and a girl walk into a department store.
“So what shall we put on it first?” asks the boy.
The girl shrugs her shoulders. “Fairy lights?”
The boy looks sternly at her.
“No, ok. What about crockery? Plates. Yes, let’s start with plates.”
“What kind of plates?”
“Oh, you know, the kind of plates you eat off.”

A moment or two later…
“Oh God,” shrieks the girl. “We need to think really hard about this! All our family and friends are going to judge us by this.”
“What do you mean?” replies the handsome fellow, eyeing the sales assistant looking dubiously at his mildly hysterical future wife.
She holds up a plate adorned with technicolour floral prints all over it. “I mean, everyone we know gets to see this list and what we’ve chosen and if we choose something hideous what’s it going to say about us? This is a test of our style and our home-life and our whole personalities!”
The boy returns his attention to the much more rational scanning machine.

Much later…
“So,” says the boy, “We’ve got 27cm, 23cm and 18cm plates in the platinum collection. I’ve put the teacups on too because I like them. They’ll go well with the coffee from the espresso maker I’ve got my eye on. Now, shall I put the sauce jug on as well?”
“What do we need a sauce jug for?” queries his lovely lady.
“Everybody needs a sauce jug!”
“Which rather makes me wonder how we’ve survived for the last five years without one…”

Closing time…
“Right,” says the very helpful sales lady. “I’ve transferred all the items that you’ve picked out today for your gift list onto the computer so that we can have a look at it and do you a printout. Oh…”
“What’s wrong?” asks the slightly weary girl as the boy gazes, defeated, into the distance.
“It’s not a big problem,” replies the very helpful sales lady. “It’s just that some of these things you’ve chosen are going to be discontinued as they’re in sale. So we’ll have to take off the bowls and the set of pans and the casserole dish and the sauce jug.”
“Oh," sighs the boy. "The sauce jug…”
